A number of different chain drive designs have been developed because they can be used for many different mechanical applications. Depending on the criteria we choose, they can be divided into different categories. When categorized according to their function, chain drives can be divided into three main types.
Power transmission chain drives
Conveyor chain drives
Lifting and Traction Chain Drive
Power transmission chain drives
This type of chain drive is specialized in transferring power between two shafts. Most machines that generate power cannot consume it in the same place, such as pumps with electric motors. When chains are used for this process, they are called power transmission chains.
Common examples are bicycles, agricultural machinery, compressors, engine camshafts, etc. All of these applications use chain drives for power transmission.
Conveyor Chain Drives
Another common application of chain drives is conveyor chains. Conveyors use chain drives designed specifically for material transportation. They come in hundreds of different designs and motion characteristics such as low friction, high temperature and chemical resistance. They can also be antistatic and magnetic.
Conveyor chain drives are used in industries such as packaging, automotive, food and beverage production, pharmaceutical and textile. Accessories can be fitted to conveyor chains to suit a variety of applications.
Lifting Traction Chain Drives
Chain hoists are probably the most common piece of machinery used to lift and lower equipment. They can lift huge weights effortlessly using pulleys.
Hand chain hoists or trolley hoists are common in garages, workshops, construction sites, marine engine rooms and many factories. They can lift/lower heavy loads weighing up to 20 tons. Lifting chains can be pneumatic, electric or manual.
Lifting chains can be divided into two categories:
Oval chains
Stud Chains
Elliptical Chain
Oval ring chains are also known as coil chains. They are commonly used as low to medium load lifting chains, often for low speed lifting applications. The links are oval in shape and each one is interlocked and welded.
Occasionally, square link type chains may be used, but they are usually avoided due to poor stress distribution and kinking problems.
Stud Chains
Stud chains are a better alternative for high load applications. Each link is fitted with a stud across its internal width. The stud prevents kinking and adds strength and durability. Double-ended stud chains can be used for boat anchors and other heavy lifters.
